Adria Fung’s Contribution Towards STEM

On June 27, 2022 Hawai'i Space Grant’s K-12 specialist Adria Fung was interviewed by “EducationWeek” on the topic of "How a NASA-Supported Robotics Program Is Preparing Students for STEM Careers”. Adria created a robotics curriculum across Hawai'i to promote and prepare students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics or STEM.

“We’re trying to build this pipeline from K-12 and eventually have the students go on to college to build robotics or satellites, and eventually, hopefully, work at NASA as engineers,” - Adria Fung, K-12 Specialist

Adria’s robotics curriculum VEX IQ is mainly focused towards 4th-8th graders. VEX IQ is a robotics program where students can build, create, and code their own small robots. VEX IQ has robotic engineering concepts such as gear ratios, speed, and torque. When Adria was a middle school teacher she used to lead her own VEX IQ robotics team as an after school club. However, it was only exclusive to the students to the after school club. So she decided to use VEX IQ in her classes to introduce the concepts of robotics to more of her students.
