Passing of Robert Allen

With deep sadness, we share the news of Robert Allen’s passing on December 9, 2014 from cancer. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Robert was a non-traditional student who enrolled in Honolulu Community College in his early 40s. He quickly met Professors Vern Takebayashi and Ron Takata, mentors of the Space Grant CanSat team, who appointed Robert the Student Coordinator of the HCC CanSat team. Their work led to a successful launch at the 2006 ARLISS (A Rocket Launch for International Student Satellites) competition at Black Rock, Nevada. Read more about the project in Dr. Ron Takata’s article “Mission accomplished for rocket team” that appeared in the Honolulu Advertiser on November 2, 2006. In a remembrance to Robert, we would like to share the words he wrote in a letter featured in the HSGC Fall 2008 Newsletter “Thoughts to a Senator about CanSat—What it Means to Me“.
